Japanese New Year Celebration

Japanese New Year's Celebration: O-shogatsu! Join Boston Children’s Museum in celebration the Year of the Dragon at this year’s O-Shogatsu, or Japanese New Year celebration!

Festivities will include live Taiko drumming by Rutsubo Taiko, Shishi-Mai (lion dance) by Steve Long, and Chado tea ceremony demonstrations by Urasenke Boston. Families can also participate in Mochi-tsuki (rice-pounding ceremony), Koma-mawashi (Japanese top spinning) and other Japanese New Year games.

Don’t miss - Two special programs for this year’s O-shogatsu celebration only.

  • Special guest, Mr. Shobun Setsu: a Japanese Calligraphy Artist from Kobe, Japan!

With 20 years of experience in Shodo calligraphy, Mr. Setsu’s goal is to communicate and make a contribution to the world through his art. He will demonstrate a dynamic Kakizome New Year’s calligraphy with a large brush and ink. This is not to be missed!

  • Special activities to learn about Tohoku, Japan!

Tohoku is the region that was affected by the earthquake and Tsunami disasters in March, 2011. Learn the customs of Tohoku and wish for their swift recovery in 2012.

Boston Children’s Museum is home to the Japanese House (Kyo-no-Machiya), an authentic silk merchant’s house from Kyoto, Japan. The house will be decked out with New Year’s decorations for the event.
