The Upper School students at Shore Country Day School were challenged to calculate an estimate for the amount of concrete used to build the 2nd story floor and roof in the new building.
Leo Hogan, Project Superintendent of the Lawrence A. Griffin Center for Creativity, challenged the Upper School students to enter a contest -- Shore's Concrete Pour Contest. The objective was to find a reasonable and close estimate to the amount of concrete used to build the second story floor and the lower roof combined.
Mr. Hogan, who announced that the number to hit was 179 yards, supplied students with actual slab architectural drawings, which remained in the library, as well as smaller, not-to-scale drawings. The closest estimate was 176 yards! Four teams, equaling eight students, came close enough to be considered winners.
These students, seven girls and one boy, received a private guided tour of the construction site with Mr. Hogan on Monday, December 17, which was followed by a special lunch.
Congratulations to the winners and kudos to everyone who took the time to prepare an estimate.
