Rockport Art Association Summer Programs for Kids

During the summer Rockport Art Association presents a wide range of exciting educational programs for children in the RAA’s studio. Programs include painting, clay modeling, paper making, crafts and more!

The 2010 Summer Schedule includes:

  • Painted Furniture - Pam Jones
    • July 5 - 9 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Learn the brush strokes, color wheel & decorative techniques of folk art.  Students should bring in one (or two small) pieces of furniture such as chairs, stools, tables, etc. that they wish to paint.  Let your imagination go wild in making your selection . . . Yard Sales are a great source!
  • Aboriginal Art - Pam Jones
    • July 12 - 16 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Walk on the wild side as we discover Australia's Aboriginal Culture.  This workshop will explore a wide range of art materials used to create Aboriginal dot paintings and rain sticks.  Dreamtime storytelling will serve as inspiration for the art.
  • Fiber Arts: The Art & Craft of Felting - Kathy Hilliard
    • July19 - 23 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Wool never felt better!  Using these simple materials: wool, soap & water, students will create bright and beautiful felt projects . . . balls that bounce, beads, finger puppets and much, much more.  This is an eco-friendly class.  Warning: participants will get clean hands!  Fun for all ages!
  • Garden Sculpture - Kathy Hilliard
    • July 26 - 30 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Design your own sundial, birdbath, garden stepping stones and more!  Use concrete, beach glass, pottery shards and personal collectibles.  Learn a variety of sculpting and decorating techniques - from casting to mosaics.  Dress for a mess!
  • Sculpture - Erin O'Sullivan
    • August 2 - 6 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Assume the role of artist as dreamer, observer & storyteller . . . and have fun while creating 3-D sculpture.  Young artists learn how to work with plaster, armatures, wire & found objects while working on diverse projects such as animal masks, figurative sculpture, mobiles, casting & abstracts constructions. Discover the thrill of creation while building self-confidence as an artist.
  • Drawing & Painting Session I - Becky Merry
    • August 9 - 13 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Have fun while learning to develop your drawing & painting skills.  Become familiar with the elements of basic drawing, observation, perspective & composition, as well as color mixing & watercolor techniques. Plein air drawing & painting methods will be used with beautiful Rockport as your outdoor studio.
  • Drawing & Painting Session II - Becky Merry
    • August 16 - 20 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Because of the popularity of this workshop, students will be given two opportunities to hone their creative skills while learning the foundation of the classically trained artist! Enjoy one or both sessions.
  • Clay Works - Erin O'Sullivan
    • August 23 - 27 ~ 10:00 - 12:00
    • Explore the fascinating medium of clay - making vessels to sculpture.  Discover how to see and use the elements of art: line, shape, form, texture & color while learning the basic techniques of working with clay and finishing work with glazes, stains & paints.  Students should wear old clothes and bring a large paint shirt.

Winter Family Field Trip: Terrific Animal Tracking

Families will learn about identifying animal tracks at Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport Massachusetts!
Mammals such as squirrels, rabbits and deer leave many signs that they are active in winter. Learn how to interpret the tracks and signs or clues of active animals in winter. Stay active and warm with a group challenge about hibernation. Conduct an experiment about snow insulation.

Kidleidoscope at Breakheart Reservation

Kidleidoscope is a program designed for preschoolers at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus Massachusetts
Come join our park interpreter for a story time and nature walk! Complete a small craft and explore the woods! Walks are gently paced and approximately 1 mile, though not accessible for strollers. Appropriate for families with children 3-5 years old. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Unraveling Winters Wild Tales - Animal Tracking for Families

Kids will learn about tracks and signs and how they can tell a story at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield Massachusetts!
Welcome to the wild world of animal tracking! Participants will learn how to identify animal tracks by focusing on key details such as number of toes, toenail impressions, and overall size of the print.

Nice and Easy winter hike at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus Massachusetts
Join the Park Interpreter for this weekly guided hike! Each trip will highlight natural and historic features unique to Breakheart. Hikes are moderately paced and range from 2-3 miles over sometimes uneven and rocky terrain. Best for ages 8 years and up. Meet at the Visitor Center.
